Midwest

A weak cold front over the Midwest and Ohio valley today will trigger scattered thunderstorms. A few storms could turn severe with strong wind gusts and hail from across southern Illinois, southern Indiana and Kentucky. Highs today will range from the upper 50s in northern Michigan to the low 90s in Kansas. Sunday will feature a new, stronger cold front, which will enter the northern Plains and Upper Midwest from Canada.Scattered thunderstorms are expected from the eastern Dakotas to northern Michigan. A few storms could turn severe.Much cooler air will push in behind the front, with high temperatures in the 60s and 70s (maybe even a few 50s in the high Plains and along the Canadian border) from the Dakotas and Nebraska to Michigan.

Northeast

Most of southern New England and the Mid-Atlantic will finally dry out today. The exception will be northern New England where an upper-level trough will keep scattered showers in the forecast through Sunday.Another cold front approaches the region on Saturday night.The result will be scattered showers from New England to West Virginia before evening. Highs today will range from the 60s along the Canadian border to the 70s in southern New England and some low 80s outside of the mountains in the Mid-Atlantic. Sunday will feature a few showers in northern New York and northern New England and a few thunderstorms in southern West Virginia and southwest Virginia .Another front will spark more showers and thunderstorms over parts of the region on Monday.

South

It will be dry for a change, from the southern Plains to the Deep South today.Afternoon temperatures will be rather warm, with highs ranging from the 90s in Texas, to the 80s across the Southeast.Scattered thunderstorms are expected today along a stalled front over south Florida, and over far south and southwest Texas in a southwest flow of moisture.There will also be a thunderstorm chance over the northern Tennessee Valley , as a cold front dips in from the north.Sunday will be hot from the southern Plains to Deep South, with highs in the 80s and 90s.A few thunderstorms could move into the eastern Tennessee Valley , as a weakening cold front nears the area.

West

A little unusual for May but parts of the interior West will continue to see scattered thunderstorms into the weekend, especially during the afternoon hours.The best chance will be from southern and eastern Oregon , northern California and the Sierra to the high Plains from Montana to New Mexico. In contrast, Washington, Southern California and the Desert Southwest will see mostly sunny skies and warm temperatures. Highs today will be in the 80s to near 90 across the lower elevations of the interior Northwest. Much cooler high pressure will move into Montana and Wyoming by Monday with highs only in the 50s and 60s. The heat in the Desert Southwest, mid 90s to low 100s, is about average for this time of the year.
